Physiologic
Specialization
Till recently, there
was no direct evidence of presence of any physiologic specialization
either in the nematode population or in the bacterium associated with
it. However, considerable variations in the shape and size of nematode
body were recorded" and it was suggested that these variations could be
because of geographical regions. In a recent study, five different
geographical populations were evaluated under Indian conditions, on six
wheat varieties and it was observed that there were two distinct
populations, both with regard to
nematode reproductively and reactions on the wheat cultivars10.

In the
early twenties, losses as high as 70 per cent have been reported15
from wheat growing regions. Leukel20 recorded an
outbreak of this disease in the Virginia State of the United States
of America, as a result of continuous wheat culture without rotation
in response to a campaign 'raise more wheat and win the war'. Many
farms were so badly infested that they could not be harvested at
all. The disease is still a problem in the wheat regions of India.
According to an estimate, yield losses in one State (Delhi) alone
ranged from 1-3 per cent, with as much as 50 per cent in individual
