Genus Ditylenchus Filipjev

Characteristic thickening of leaf sheath and stem of rye, accompanied by wavy leaf growth and general stunting of plants led to the discovery of a diseased condition, described as 'stock'1. The causal agent was later found to be a plant parasitic nematode, described under the generic name, Anguillula dipsaci, infecting teasel, Dipsacus fullonum. The subsequent years witnessed the description of the same nematode under different names, Anguilullina dipsaci var. amsinckiae, Anguillula devastatrix1-4, etc. Apparently, the confusion arose, by and large, due to the failure of earlier workers to recognize the existence of physiological races within conspecific populations of dipsaci and the ability of the nematode to attack different crops with varied symptomatology and pathogenicity. Finally, the confusion was partially resolved by Filipjev" when is proposed the genus Ditylenchus with D. dipsaci as the type species.

Siddiqi recognizes 52 valid species under the genus Ditylenchus in addition to D. dipsaci. Of these, D. dipsaci, D. angustus, D, destructor and D. myceliophagus are of economic importance.
